A nominal £500 fine was imposed, however the judge indicated that had the company been solvent, a fine of £5,000 would have been levied.
The case arose out of a Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) inspection at the former Courtaulds site in Carrickfergus, which was known to contain asbestos.
A worker was observed using burning equipment to cut up a large structure. On closer examination the inspectors saw suspected asbestos in the area close to the structure.
A prohibition notice was served by HSENI on the company to stop the work and a follow up examination of the area uncovered more asbestos in a dangerous condition.
