Limavady company fined for Asbestos Breaches

HSE Nothern IrelandAn environmental company in Limavady has been sentenced at Laganside Crown Court after pleading guilty to health and safety offences relating to asbestos work.

A nominal £500 fine was imposed, however the judge indicated that had the company been solvent, a fine of £5,000 would have been levied.

The case arose out of a Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) inspection at the former Courtaulds site in Carrickfergus, which was known to contain asbestos.

A worker was observed using burning equipment to cut up a large structure. On closer examination the inspectors saw suspected asbestos in the area close to the structure.

A prohibition notice was served by HSENI on the company to stop the work and a follow up examination of the area uncovered more asbestos in a dangerous condition.
