4th Legionnaires’ Disease Case confirmed in Spanish Resort

Cooling towers unmanaged for 5 years!

HBE LegionellaThe Health Department in Spain confirmed yesterday that a fourth case of Legionnaires’ Disease has been diagnosed in the area of Alcoy in the last three weeks, with patients being treated at the Hospital Virgen de los Lirios. The outbreak is thought to be linked to Legionella bacteria growth with the increased summer temperatures.

Cases of Legionnaires’ Disease began emerging in the last week of July, when two patients were diagnosed with the disease, one of whom, a 95-year-old woman, died. However the Department of Health has stated that the woman had “other health issues” so the cause of death could not be attributed to Legionnaires’ exclusively.

Health sources insist that despite this being the fourth diagnosis in the area it should as yet be regarded as an isolated case.
