Sadly the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Edinburgh has claimed two lives. The total number of confirmed cases is 42, while the number of suspected cases remains at 47.

Legionella bacteria HBESeveral organisations in the area have been served improvement notices, although the HSE are quick to advise that these notices do not necessarily mean that the organisations were responsible for the outbreak, but that their policies, procedures and protocols had been found to be sub standard upon inspection by the HSE.

Perhaps this is the most worrying part of the investigation. We have to ask why, when then the policies and processes of established organisations were tested, were so many discovered to not come up to scratch?

As an organisation, you have a legal obligation to maintain your water hygiene to a minimum standard. Although budgets are tight in this economic climate, this is can never be an excuse to be take short cuts with your procedural responsibilities when it comes to infectious diseases.
