HBE Compost legionella bacteriaNHS Lothian has said that it is investigating four cases of Legionnaires’ Disease which may be linked to garden compost.

Two patients are currently being treated in intensive care in hospital and another two have been discharged after treatment. All four patients are said to be keen gardeners and aged between 64 and 82. They had all recently bought different products containing gardening compost before they became infected.

The health board is currently trying to identify the source of the outbreak and several samples of commercial gardening compost  have been sent for analysis.
