A care home provider has been fined £3m following the death of a resident at an Essex nursing home after he contracted Legionnaires’ disease.

The HSE investigation found that for more than a year, during which time major refurbishment works had been carried out, the well-known care home chain failed to implement the necessary water hygiene control and monitoring measures required to safely manage their hot and cold water system.

It also found that the Duty Holders and Responsible Persons, who are responsible for overseeing legionella controls and for monitoring the water system, had not been trained to the required standards.
